York

Here you'll find all the information and links to other York tourist sites you'll need to make your visit to York a memorable occasion.

*NEW* Whats on guide

The skyline of the city is dominated by one building, York Minster which you'll have noticed we use in our logo and company name!

Construction of the Minster started in 1220 but the project was so ambitious that completion took until the year 1480. 200 years of building work!

I've known builders to start a job, then take an age to return and finish, but never one to take that long!

But seriously once seen you'll appreciate why the Minster took 200 years to build. It really is a wonderful building. For more details on the Minster, opening times, services etc. check out the official Minster site at http://www.yorkminster.org

Yorks city walls are almost 3 miles long and surround most of the city centre. First built in roman times, then added to and rebuilt over the centuries. Most of the present day walls date from 12th and 13th centuries. The walls and bars (gatehouses) were almost demolished in the late 19th century by York Corporation.

Only protests by the citizens of York stopped the destruction, unfortunately several sections of wall and a number of fortifications were demolished. Common-sense prevailed and the walls have since seen much restoration work and are amongst the best preserved city walls in England. The walls are now a grade one listed building and a scheduled ancient monument.

The walls have since become a popular tourist attraction and attract over a million visitors per year. For a virtual tour of the city walls point your web browser to http://www.york.gov.uk/walls/index.html

The History of York

Yorks history can be traced back over 2000 years and possibly back to the iron age. But it was the arrival of the Roman 9th Legion in AD71 who created the first outpost that was to grow to become the city of York.
In AD 71 following orders from the Emperor Vespasian the Roman governor of Britain led his troops northwards from Lincoln. His goal to conquer the hostile northern tribes known as the Brigantes. The temporary camp he initially made grew to become a more permanent settlement and was named Eboracum. When the 6th legion took command in AD120 the fortress of Eboracum covered a site of 50 acres and housed several thousand troops. Over the years a town grew beside the fortress and many new roads were constructed. Eboracum became the capital of lower Britain and an important roman city.
